Product Features and Details
In 1934 the DRG ordered an electric locomotive without drive axles with the series designation E 63. In addition to shunting services the loco was to be used on electrified branch lines. Consequently the decision was made to use a sturdy rod drive design and a central cab. The firms AEG and Krauss-Maffei supplied two locomotives which were almost identical in their main measurements and drive properties but which looked quite different. In 1960 the Bundesbahn overhauled series E 63 and used it successfully as late as 1978 in their established operations in Stuttgart, Munich, Augsburg and Garmisch. With the E 63 PIKO continues the series of electric locomotives of historic technical significance which began with the German Crocodile E 93. The new model represents an authentic replica of the AEG version with DB lettering from period IIIa. A particularly interesting feature is the fully operational slanting rod drive which demonstrated that proven elements of steam locomotive design could be incorporated into the design of electric locomotives. The model can negotiate curves as small as 358 mm radius. It has close couplings and NEM sockets at both ends as well as weathered polished steel coupling rods and a digital interface.
